The Trailblazers of Broward County, Inc. is a non- profit 501 ( c) 3 organization dedicated to preser ving our histor y in Broward County.

We promote African American histor y and achievements. I t is our mission

to inspire, educate, and make improvements for our communities in Broward County. African Americans and the African diaspora have made steadfast sacrifices and contributions throughout the United

States. We celebrate them and honor them for their s ignificant work. We must share knowledge and wisdom from the past to inform the present and help shape the future.

HISTORY

The Trailblazers of Broward County, Inc. was established in 2007 by founders, Beauregard Cummings and Mar y Black Rizor, pioneers and community leaders in Broward County.

As community leaders, Mr. Cummings and Mrs. Rizor had a keen vision for organizing l ike- minded individuals to preser ve black histor y in Broward County. Through much reflection and the yearning for the celebration of Black histor y, both were committed to recognizing achievements and contributions of African Americans. Their commitment to the Broward County community led to the establishment

of The Trailblazers which pays homage to Broward’ s black

pioneers, with emphasis on the Sankofa bird and i ts power ful spiritual message of “ return and get it” as i t relates to our past; inspiring us to gain knowledge and wisdom to create a better future.

OLD DIXIE COURT REUNION

Built in 1938 , the City of For t Lauderdale built the Dixie Cour t Apar tments, providing running water and electricity to blacks. Generations of black families have called OLD DIXIE COURT home.

MANGOES, GUAVA, AND MULLET

A theatrical play celebrating the history of the black community in the City of Fort Lauderdale.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS GAL A

Christmas holiday celebration with delicious

food shared in the spirit of Christmas; and a collection and donation of Christmas toys for needy children.

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION of DILL ARD HIGH SCHOOL

SANKOFA MONUMENT ANNUAL CEREMONY

A celebration of the historical Sankofa bird monument located at

200 NW Sistrunk Blvd.

Fort Lauderdale renowned artist and sculptor, Mr. George Gadson, designed and created a Sankofa bird monument for the Trailblazers of Broward County. Mr. Gadson attends Trailblazers’ meeting, sharing

engaging history and also perspective on the Sankofa bird’ s meaning as an expression of learning from the past, embracing the present, and preparing for the future.
